The Dog and the Thief Story

Read the English version of ‘The Dog and the Thief’ fable. Discover how a clever watchdog protected his farm by refusing a bribe. A perfect moral story for kids about loyalty and integrity.

Once upon a time, there was a clever and lovely watchdog living on a farm. One night, while everyone on the farm was fast asleep, a thief climbed over the garden wall. The dog noticed the intruder, ran to the wall, and began to bark loudly. The thief was terrified and realized he had to quiet the dog, but no matter what he did, he couldn’t stop the barking.

The thief said:
— “Brother dog, don’t bark! I am not a stranger, don’t you recognize me? I am a relative of the farm owner.”

But the dog ignored the thief’s words and continued to bark.

This time, the thief took a piece of meat from his bag and threw it in front of the dog. He thought the dog would eat the meat and leave him alone.

The dog replied:
— “No, you are a thief! I can tell you are insincere because you are trying to climb over the wall instead of entering through the farm gate. Besides, giving away random gifts only makes your bad intentions even clearer.”

When the thief realized the dog would never let him in, he quickly fled the scene and never passed near that farm again.

Moral of the Story: A bribe is often a warning of hidden danger. True loyalty cannot be bought with a piece of meat.
